My name is Amanda, and in 2011, our family was forever changed. My brother, CPL Preston Dennis, was on his second deployment when his unit was attacked. He sacrificed his life to protect his comrades and this country.
Preston had a deep love for the outdoors - a passion that flourished growing up in Northern California. He spent most of his time outside, engaging in sports or participating in volunteer activities to better the environment. His enthusiasm for nature was contagious.
Since losing my brother, I have found peace and comfort in the great outdoors. The healing properties of nature have been incredibly beneficial, and I believe this solace should be shared with others who are grieving. As John Muir once said, "In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks".
Watching my sister, a USAF veteran, embark on her own healing journey with the support of various nonprofit organizations, I realized this was something my brother would have been proud of. Inspired by this, I wanted to create a space for siblings within these family units, who are often overlooked in Gold Star Family programs that prioritize spouses and children.
Through Advanced-1 Adventures, we host various outdoor activities, allowing siblings to bond and find healing together. Whether it's hiking, camping or water activities, these shared experiences offer a unique opportunity for siblings to connect and create lasting memories.
By focusing on siblings, we honor the legacy of those we've lost and ensure that every family member has the chance to heal and find peace in nature. Through Advanced-1 Adventures, we strive to bring the healing power of the outdoors to those who need it most, fostering a supportive community for all Gold Star families.
